Steve graduated high school in 1972, and decided to continue his education at Reed College in Portland, Oregon (Stanford, 2008). The required classes that he was enrolled in did not interest him. After about six months of uncertainty about his future, he dropped out. He thought that it was the best decision rather than staying enrolled and taking classes with no plan. Also, it was costly, so he thought it would be selfish and irresponsible for his parents to continue to spend their life savings on his schooling. He did not drop out completely. He found fascination in a Calligraphy class, so he dropped in on that occasionally. During this time, he slept on the floor of friends rooms, returned coke bottles to five cent deposits to buy food, and walked several miles to get one good meal once a week (Stanford, 2008). The fact that he went through some of the same things that many other college students go through, gives him credibility to give the commencement speech to Stanfords graduating class of 2005. Although he did not graduate, he is still familiar with some of the life lessons that some college students experience. Fast forward a few years, he and Steve Wozniak started Apple in his parents garage when he was twenty years old. Over the next decade, Apple grew from the small startup company in his parents garage into a two billion dollar company (Stanford, 2008). Just after his thirtieth birthday, they released the Macintosh. All of his success came to an abrupt end. He was fired from Apple- the company that he started. Despite the turn of events and public embarrassment, he still felt passionate about his work. As a result of that passion, he started a Company named NeXT, which Apple later purchased and put him back as an employee of the company (Stanford, 2008). I chose to observe this speech for many reasons. The first, being that it was easy for me to comprehend, and I found it encouraging myself. The underlying message and lessons that were present throughout the speech were outstanding. I also chose this speech because I knew that Steve Jobs was a college dropout turned billionaire and in moments of discouragement, I believe that it can be me too. I just have to find something great to invent. On a serious note, I was interested in hearing how he would relate his life story to the graduates and the rest of the audience that he was speaking to. I also found it interesting that I am a college student and will have to sit through one soon. Lastly, I chose his speech because I relate to his story about his early life. I was given up for adoption, so what was a small detail to many was an eye-catching one for me. In regard to the audience, the purpose for the occasion was to honor the 2005 Graduating class from Stanford. The audiences interest in the occasion was the fact that they were graduating and being rewarded for doing so by getting their diplomas. As for the other members of the audience, their interest was in supporting their friend, family member, or loved one on their accomplishment. The ceremony was held outside, and the audience was made up by about twenty thousand spectators of all age groups, so the ceremony being held outside was a good choice. The environment was conductive to effective listening by the audience, but if the weather conditions were different, it could not have been. The audiences general disposition to the topic and speaker were friendly and welcoming. After all, they were listening Billionaire, Steve Jobs. They laughed when he made a joke, even when it was not funny. Their disposition to the occasion was probably a mixture of emotions since it was their colle ge graduation, but the most obvious one was happiness. Structure of the Speech The general purpose of the speech was to give the graduates a gift of advice, and the specific purpose was to advise them with three stories about his life. The central idea of his speech was the three subtopics and how they related to his life and how they could relate to the audiences lives. The three subtopics were: Connecting the Dots, Love and Loss, and Death. In the first story about Connecting the Dots, Jobs supporting material included the story about his early life and adoption, going to and dropping out of college, and the beginning of his career. The second storys (Love and Loss) supporting material consisted of stories about his career igniting, his career coming to an unanticipated end, and finding his purpose again. In his final story about Death, Steves supporting material was found in the stories about how the certainty that we are all going to die and his pancreatic cancer diagnosis. The organization and development of his ideas were well thought out and flowed well in a chronological order. The introduction in comparison to the rest of the speech was adequate. Delivery of the Speech Stephen Lucas states in The Art of Public Speaking that a wonderfully written speech can be ruined by poor delivery (239). Jobs delivery was not poor, but it was not excellent. I would say that it was good and effective. He got his point across and the audience was receptive. He read his speech verbatim from a manuscript and this put a lot of limitations on his speech. In regard to his voice, he spoke with a medium volume- not too loud and not too quiet. His pitch had no inflections and he was pretty much monotone throughout the entirety of the speech except one memorable moment. During his third story, he seems to get comfortable in his speech, and his pitch increases for a brief second, but then he slips back in to his monotone sound. He being monotone also ruined the moments where he wanted to be humorous. He spoke at a steady rate with the exception for the long pauses that were between the first and second as well as the second and third stories. In regard to the speakers body, his appearance was appropriate as he wore the traditional graduation gown. Steve stood behind the podium for the entirety of his speech which is normal for the occasion. He seemed to have shifted his weight from one foot to the other a few times, but not enough to create distraction. Jobs also kept one hand on the top of the podium and the other seemed to be used as a marker for his manuscript. He awkwardly touched his mouth a few times at the beginning of his speech and touched his beard a few times throughout. His eye contact was not the best but it was not poor as he shifted his eyes from the manuscript to the audience. He took a drink of his water toward the end of his speech while the audience applauded. After finishing up his speech, he did not wait to let the final remarks sink in as recommended by Lucas (249). He had no physical visual aids to make use of, but everyone could imagine with their minds all of his inventions since a majority of the audience owns, has used, or even seen a Mac or Apple product. Effectiveness of the Speech The audience was polite and helpful in the fact that they laughed and applauded at times where the humor was not as obvious as it could have been if the speaker did not speak in monotone or from a manuscript. The overall effectiveness of the speech was good because, as mentioned before, he got his point across and the audience was receptive. He used a mixture of patterns for presenting his speech. Although it was not explicitly stated, one of the underlying themes of the message was the importance of staying true to oneself, to personal aspirations and values and, above all else, how people might learn from their experience (Richardson and Arthur, 2013). Overall, he used a chronological organizational pattern which made it easy for the audience to keep up with and interpret. For specific stories, like Connecting the Dots and Death, he used a causal pattern which made them more relatable. For Love and Loss, he used a problem-solution pattern. His points were made at the beginning of the speech, and he addressed each of them in the body. Richardson and Arthur state that while addressing several different themes, each of the stories and the entire speech were permeated by a single underlying message: that people need to listen to their hearts and heads, do what is important to them, pursue their ambitions (46). He supported each of them with evidence from his experiences and told the story in a way that the entire audience could relate. Despite his monotone, he was effective in his purpose, and few entrepreneurs have captures the worlds attention as Steve Jobs did (Hurley-Hanson and Giannantonio, 2013). Running while playing football, for instance, is an active pursuit because the image shows activity and activity requires movement. Human activity benefits the health of our bodies. Also, I face some challenges when it comes to being active. First of all, being active is easy but staying active is hard. I always try to stay active and always do something, but sometimes it just gets tiring and I get sick of being active so I take a break or rest. Another challenge that I face is that I can get distracted. Being a teenager, there are many distractions such as TV, cellphones, and friends. Sometimes, these things can make you be lazy and get distracted. In addition, active people like to be around friends and in order to have friends, you must be friendly. This quality of a person comes from their personality and shows character within someone. A simple handshake can demonstrate just how friendly someone is. Friendliness is being sociable and not being shy. A way that I carry friendliness out is talking to people and listening to people. That seems very simple but it is the very best thing for becoming friends with someone and being friendly to your original friends. A challenge that I face with being friendly is laziness. Teenagers get lazy all the time, and for me, I get lazy just about every day. Laziness causes me to become unsocial and unfriendly, but when I wake myself up and snap out of it, I become more social and friendlier. Another challenge that I face with being friendly is bad days. Having a bad day causes me to become sad and it makes me quiet and not social and upbeat. But when that day is over, I soon become more upbeat and friendlier towards others because that’s just how I am. Third of all, being friendly will encourage people to step out and be more bold and daring. Being bold and daring shows the lack of fear in people’s lives. It also creates an adventurous passion within someone. For instance, jumping off a cliff displays boldness and courage at its core because it tackles the idea of being fearless and adventurous at the same time. Being bold and daring helps me grow as a person and it helps me overcome things. For instance, fear is a big struggle for most people and most teenagers. When I face my fear, though, I do those bold and daring things and I tackle fear head on. Being courageous is really what matters and that’s what I try to strive for in every adventurous obstacle I face. Knowing that being active, friendly, and bold helps me grow as a teenager, I more free and courageous. These traits help other teenagers grow, as well. Polemics On Veiling Egyptian Women In The Twentieth Century Introduction .. so much energy has been expended by Muslim men and then Muslim women to remove the veil and by others to affirm or restore it .. (Ahmed 167). This paper explores these efforts in two specific stages: the first and the last thirds of the twentieth century. Through an analysis of some of the various arguments on the veil, I will try to induce some general characteristics of the debate on the issue and on women during these two specific periods of time. The starting point will be Kasim Amin's Tahrir el Mara'a (Liberation of Woman) and the counter argument of Talat Harb's Tarbiet el Mara'a wal Hijab, (Educating Women and the Veil). The debate between those two protagonists which has become a prototype of the debate on the veil throughout the century (Ahmed P. 164). Malak Hefni Nassif's and Hoda Sha'arawi's attitudes towards the veil represent an interesting insight to two different interpretations of the hijab issue by feminist activists that prevail throughout the century. The whole synthesis of this early debate is then put in juxtaposition to the debate later in the century as represented by the avalanche of literature on the topic in the seventies, the views of some famous sheikhs like Mohammed Metwally el Shaarawi and others, and the heated debate initiated by the Minister of Education's decree of 1994 to prevent school administrations from imposing the hijab on girls as part of the uniform. The Early Debate Kasim Amin's Tahrir El-Mara'a (Published 1899) It may not be an exaggeration to say that Amin's Tahrir al-Mara'a was one of the most controversial book in Egypt's modern history. It has ignited a strong debate and prompted more than thirty reaction articles and books either to defy or assert his argument against the veil (Ahmed P. 164). The ideas of the book were not totally new, they echoed the writings of some writers like Mariam al-Nahhas (1856-1888), Zaynab Fawwaz (1860-1914), Aisha al-Taymuriah (1840-1902), and Murqus Fahmi's (a Coptic lawyer) four act play Al Mar'ah fi al-Sharq or (The Woman in the East) (Badran P. 19). Yet, Amin's book double-scored for coming from a Muslim judge and for his overt proposal to unveiling women's faces. His words were not the only challenge to the existing notions of the hijab, it was his caliber as a Moslim judge that has vocalized his call to unveil women and gave his book importance. After an introduction loaded with emotional phrases on the degradation of the Egyptian woman and an exaltation of the European woman, the book is divided into four sections: Educating women, Women's veil, The woman and the nation, and Marriage and divorce. Amin starts his argument calling for the Hijab Shara'ei stating that the Hijab in its form then (covering the face, the hair and the whole body) was not mandated by the Shari'aa. He further adds that he was not calling for the extreme of the West which makes the woman liable to seduction (Amin P. 65). The argument against the veil is in two sections: The religious section which is mainly text interpretation and some Hadith that prompt women to cover the hair and the whole body except for the hands and the face; and the social (practical / everyday life) perspective. The later section includes social ideas such as the inconvenience for women with their faces covered to dwell in business, to testify in courts or to get engaged (as the groom should see her face first). Furthermore, he argues that unveiling would make women watch their behaviors as they could be recognized and hence their reputation would be at stake if they did any wrong. Still, from the practical social point of view, the flimsy bourqo' (face cover) used was more tempting as it makes the viewer curious to see what was intended to be hidden. He further argues that, if women are imprisoned in the hareem (part of the house where women are secluded), then even if they did not commit any shameful act, it would not be due to any virtue in them, but to the fact that they did not have the freedom to do otherwise. Hester and Pearl are like rosebushes because they try to keep people at a distance from them. As Pearl grows up she becomes a very pretty, young girl as her mother is. She is also faced with the reality that she was born out of wedlock. Pearl develops a rude, annoying personality because she has never had anyone that has wanted to be close to her because of her predestined status in the community. Before she has even grown up she is known as an inferior member of society. Her personality is her protection, just as thorns on a rosebush protect the flowers. Hester uses her Scarlet A to keep Hester from having anyone close to her. Her past has kept her from wanting anyone to try and pry into her business. She would rather people stay away from her and her family to prevent any more gossip or talk about her. However, by the novel's end, Hester has become a proto-feminist mother figure to the women of the community. The sham e attached to her scarlet letter is long gone. Women recognize that her punishment stemmed in part from the town fathers' sexism, and they come to Hester seeking shelter from the sexist forces under which they themselves suffer. Examine the extent to which expenditure on arms and the armed forces is justifiable in the modern world. With all its wars, terrorist attacks and genocides, history might suggest that the armed forces has a critical and unquestionable role in any nation-state. Since the peak of the cold war in the 1970s and 80s, organised conflicts of all kinds, such as civil wars, genocides, repression by autocratic governments, terrorist attacks, have declined throughout the world and their death tolls have declined even more precipitously. Despite the trend of the New Peace, world military expenditure in 2013 is estimated to have reach $1.747 trillion and 2012 saw the highest total military spending than in any year since World War 2. Are these military spendings a good return on its national-security â€Å"investment’, for it is clearly an investment intended for peace and security. This essay aims to show that expenditure on arms and armed forces are justifiable in the modern world to a very small extent because it facilitates violence, results in power imbalance and its money can be put to better use. First, expenditure on arms and armed forces is not justifiable as such military spendings facilitate violence and thus violates human rights. Countries without military capability cannot easily undertake â€Å"wars of choice† or wars whose purposes evolve, as in Iraq, from dismantling wars of mass destruction to promoting democracy. The last five major wars that the United States undertook, namely Korea 1950, Vietnam 1955, Kuwait 1990, Afghanistan 2001 and Iraq 2003 were the ones in which the United States attacked countries that had not directly attacked the United States. Furthermore, wars involving powers that have the military and economic capability allows for such conflicts to exist for prolonged periods of time. For example, four out of the five wars mentioned above are still unresolved. The United States possession of military establishment that has a capability far beyond its ability to defend the homeland hence gives it a capability to undertake wars of choice, to the extent that Vietnam and Iraq prove to be miscalculations and strategic blunders. In the UK, the Ministry of Defence redefines the purpose of the armed forces as â€Å"meeting a wider range of expeditionary tasks, at greater range from the UK and with everincreasing strategic, operational and tactical tempo† which â€Å"could only conceivably be undertaken alongside the US†. This means that their ‘defence capability’ is now retained for the purpose of offence. Expenditure on arms and armed forces is hence not justified on the grounds that they facilitate violence in the world as countries claim moral authority to launch attacks on other countries in the name of benign foreign intervention. Second, the disproportionate expenditure on arms and the armed forces is not justifiable because wars are no longer the biggest threat to a nation. A report published by the Oxford Research Group argues that modern defence policies are self-defeating. They concentrate on the wrong threats and respond to them in a manner which is more likely to exacerbate than to defuse them. The real challenges, it contends, are presented by climate change, competition over resources, the marginalisation of the poor and our own military deployments. By displacing people from their homes and exacerbating food shortages, climate change will cause social breakdown and mass migration. Competition for resources means that the regions which possess them – particularly the Middle East – will remain the focus of conflict. As improved education is not matched by better prospects for many of the world’s poor, the resulting sense of marginalisation provides a more hospitable environment for insurrection. Last, the expenditure on arms and armed forces is not justifiable because the disproportionate distribution of military expenditure leads to an unjustifiable imbalance of power. In 2013, nearly four-fifths of all military expenditure was made by 15 states and just 2 states, the United States and China, made nearly half of all military expenditure. American primacy in the global distribution of capabilities is one of the most salient features of the contemporary international system. Their expenditures on arms is more than the next 14 countries combined together. This extraordinary imbalance leads to a unipolar world likely to be built around rules and institutions as desired by the United States. The extent to which the powerful countries can translate its formidable capabilities into meaningful political influence is debatable as the United State’s selective involvement in Vietnam or Iraq but lack thereof in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge era seems to reflect that America’s foreign policy , especially after  2001, has been a reflection simply of the idiosyncratic and provocative strategies of the Bush administration itself rather than a manifestation of the deeper structural features of the global system of power. Hence, expenditure on arms and armed forces is justifiable to a small extent as it has allowed for the presence of many ‘bullies’ on the world stage. However, expenditure on armed forces can also be justified as nations do have the sovereignty and right to protect their own nations. Ironically due to the current situation of massive military spendings, the world is still vulnerable to threats, especially from terrorism, in the modern century. The drastic increase in United State’s military spending in the last decade can also be justified by the September 11 terrorist attacks. Hence, it is in the nation’s interests to be as prepared as they possibly can. Since the beginning of civilisations, violence has had an unmistakable role in societies and there is little evidence to indicate its extinction in the near future. Some argue that it is human nature to challenge, oppose and expand. Furthermore, mistakes in history such as when Neville Chamberlain wanted to cut Defence spending in Britain and â€Å"appease Hitler† to achieve â€Å"peace in our time† have resulted in world leaders who are well guarded against making the same mistakes. Military capability is also an important source of legitimacy for governments. For countries like the United States, their formidable military capability is also a source of national identity and pride. From yet another perspective, it is also the responsibility of governments to deliver and ensure that the security of its people is ensured within its means as stated in Rousseau’s social contract. Under these arguments, the expenditure on arms and armed forces still seem to have a justifiable place in a country’s budget. Yet, it is important to keep in mind that there are means other than a larger military force to ensure these security needs are met. Despite the initial failures of League of Nations, defence treaties such as NATO founded in 1949  are encouraging initiatives that have successfully reduced military spendings. The organisation constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party. Such institutions allow smaller nations to rely on the more powerful ones so that their budget can be more efficiently allocated to build their economies and such is the case in countries like Hungary, Poland and Ukraine. History shows that countries can reduce spendings quickly if they so desire. In the United states, military spendings declined by 74 percent in the first year after World War II and 23 percent in the first two years after the Korean War ended. Today’s slow decline in spending on obsolete systems arises not because of the increasing threat of war but because there are weak budgetary and virtually non-existent political pressures on military spendings. Thought, thru this many things we are doing in this life it seems to be so complicated. From the day we wake up until to our work and back again at night. Yet, our heart can never be compare for what id did for us, working 24 hours a day, 7 times a week, 30 days a month and so on. For this reason, it was found out that unusual feelings or emotions may lead to some malfunction of our heart. Emotional stress is one of the problems due to some problems like in our family, work, or even in our personal relationship. If emotional stress often occurs to our self, it may produce various transient cardiovascular responses leading to some changes like heart rate then eventually develop to heart disease like heart attack. Then, changes in our heart rate will lead to risk for high blood and improper function of our heart. For this reason, we need to learn how to manage our stress to lesser the risk of heart failure. Should the production and sale of cigarettes be made illegal? Cigarettes have had a declining reputation ever since they were linked to various forms of cancer, and other debilitating conditions. Cigarettes were not seen as harmful until public awareness was raised about the issue. Now, there are many advocates for cigarettes and many against them, but does the government have the right to make decisions for the public? Sadly, in the democracy we live in today, there is not much democracy at all. If the government wanted cigarettes to be banned, cigarettes would be banned. The government follows its own agenda, regardless of the general public opinion. The government will always find a way to put a facade over the law and argue that no rights are being violated. According to the United States Constitution, under the authority of Article 1, Section 8, Clause 3, better known as the commerce clause, it reads, â€Å"The congress shall have power †¦ To regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several states, and with the Indian tribes†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . This states that the federal government has the authority to govern and regulate any commerce within the states. Article one also states, â€Å"The congress shall have power†¦ provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . So if the government decided to ban cigarettes they could use this Article to argue that they are looking out for the best of the public. It is under this law that the government is able to place bans on uncontrolled substances as well. So, if the Supreme Court holds power to ban an uncontrolled substance, like marijuana, but not cigarettes, it would be inconsistent. If it has the power to ban one, it has the power to ban both, under United States law. Both marijuana and cigarettes are considered parts of commerce amongst the states, so the federal government is able to place bans where they find applicable on both. How constitutional this is is infinitely arguable, and all bans placed on uncontrolled substances have been narrowly constitutional; however, it is the law. Cigarettes should not be banned because of the amount of money the government would lose from tobacco taxes. The government makes a considerable amount of money every year from cigarette taxes. Banning cigarettes would also create a black-market for the product and cause more trouble than good. Also, a ban on cigarettes would cause an increase in unemployment worldwide. Even with tens of thousands of people becoming unemployed, the potential for black-market cigarette retail, and a proportional loss in revenue for the government, critics argue cigarettes need to be banned. The problem with these critics is that their points of argument are thin at best, and fail to give substantial reasons for banning cigarettes. Most notably, the outcry of non-smokers claiming they have to pay extra taxes for old-aged smokers that have acquired costly health problems. An interesting proposal when there are so many studies that suggest the opposite. An article from The Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that in order to have full fairness, smokers should be paid between 22 cents and $1. 28 by non-smokers for each pack smoked. This would balance out the societal costs and savings from the smokers habits (Manning 261:1604). So, while statistics say smokers get cancers, heart disease and other conditions that require costly care at a younger age, the same statistics state that smokers die at an earlier age. Therefore, they are not collecting their full potential of pension and social security benefits in their older age. They also do not cause long-term geriatric or nursing home bills like non-smokers do. Another point to make is that when a non-smoker gets lung cancer it is blamed on genetics, but when a smoker gets lung cancer it is assumed it was from smoking. Who is to say that the smoker’s lung cancer was not genetics as well? It should also be noted that lung cancer is a quick, degenerative form of cancer that kills fast which again, supports the claim that smokers cost less for taxpayers. The American Medical Association was not the only organization making these claims. Later in 1993, The U. S.  Office of Technology Assessment stated, â€Å"Reduction or elimination of smoking would improve health and extend longevity, but may not lead to savings in health care costs. In fact, significant reductions in smoking prevalence and the attendant increase in life expectancy could lead to future increases in total medical spending, in Medicare program outlays, and in the budgets of the social security†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (OTA 60). If that is not enough to convince one, the Congressional Research Service conducted a similar study with similar conclusions in 1994 which was then published in 1997 in the reputable New England Journal of Medicine. The Congressional Research Service stated, â€Å"Health care costs for smokers at a given age are as much as 40 percent higher than those for nonsmokers, but in a population in which no one smoked the costs would be 7 percent higher among men and 4 percent higher among women than the costs in the current mixed population of smokers and nonsmokers. If all smokers quit, health care costs would be lower at first, but after 15 years they would become higher than at present. In the long term, complete smoking cessation would produce a net increase in health care costs† (Barendregt et al 337). So smokers end up not costing as much as the public thinks in terms of healthcare, but what are some other reasons cigarettes should not be banned? How about the large chunk of money the government would lose from tobacco taxes? This is a very valid point seeing how revenue from tobacco taxes are used by the government as funding for hospitals, schools and other public amenities. Banning cigarettes would directly affect the amount of money the government has for these building costs. This would have a negative effect on the general public, particularly, their wallets. According to the United States treasury, in their fiscal year 2013 budget planning documents, the total federal revenue for tobacco is mentioned at over fifteen billion dollars for 2011. (U. S. Dept. of Treasury 16). With a lack of money coming from tobacco sales, the government would have to find another way to get funding for these projects and that would become evident with increases in property, income or alcohol taxes. Banning cigarettes would cause a general disturbance amongst smokers. To be able to smoke freely one day then for it to become illegal the next day would cause a lot of commotion. Harmless people in society would soon turn to illegal activities, such as smoking a cigarette, and be prosecuted for it. People are addicted to cigarettes, so a ban would not stand in the way of a lot of smokers trying to get what they want. Not only would there be a lot of irritable citizens, there would be a lot of productive and useful citizens being booked for petty crimes like possessing cigarettes. A black-market would ensue the ban and cause more trouble for the government than good. Foreign countries notorious for black-market activity would hop on the bandwagon as soon as they got word of the ban and start selling cigarettes illegally to under the table distributors in the United States. In the end, the government would end up spending more money monitoring the illegal sales of cigarettes instead of spending it on more beneficial things to society like finding and prosecuting murderers, kingpins, and organized crime. Overall, it would not be worth it. Loss of jobs needs to be accounted for as well. Not just the cigarette industry but also all the workers that contribute to the process of making a pack and selling it to distributors. There are people employed to make the cardboard-like cigarette boxes, people employed to make the paper that wraps around the cigarettes, people employed that make the designs on the packs, people employed to make the cellophane that wraps the outside of the pack. Also the truck drivers that deliver the cigarettes, and the engineers that keep the machines running in the cigarette factories, and the people who harvest tobacco, and all of the executive positions within all of these companies. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services stated 662,400 people are employed with tobacco related jobs in the United States alone and worldwide, in the tens of millions (NCDA&CS 2). What people against cigarettes do not realize is how far the ban would reach and affect the livelihoods of a massive amount of people across the globe. Banning cigarettes would cause more problems and be another thing to worry about for the government and the citizens. The government would lose money from its tobacco tax, a black-market for cigarettes would be made, forcing the government to take action, and most importantly tens of millions of employed people would be without a job. It would not make sense to stir up commotion because a few people are concerned about health risks or smokers causing extra taxation for healthcare. As stated before, smokers cost less than non-smokers and a complete cessation of smoking would cause an increase in health care taxes in the long run. For the critics saying how bad smoking is for someone’s health, they have no authority to tell people how they should live their lives. People have the freedom to choose what they do to their bodies. The general public is able to make their own decisions and the government should not be able to make decisions for the public in regards to what they put in to their bodies. Even though constitutional law saws congress has the power to make choices for the welfare of its citizens, it still should not be allowed. What personal freedoms do we have if the government starts telling us we cannot smoke cigarettes? Soon they will be telling us to stop eating so much and sleeping so little. The government will say it is for the better of the people and that they are trying to keep the public healthy, but since when does the government genuinely care about the public? The government runs its own agenda regardless of the public. It is well known that the government is not planning on banning cigarettes anytime soon. Whichever party is responsible for that decision will lose a very large amount of its support network and neither political party is willing to take that risk. Plus why take that risk when there is a chance for the government to make more money by increasing cigarette taxes? The government just wants money. The government is addicted to cigarette taxes as much as smokers are to cigarettes.
